SoccerSight at MK Dons matches
Soccer Sight is a project which aims to bring quality football commentary to blind and partially sighted people at every professional football club in the UK.
The project was set-up by RNIB, with support from The HBOS Foundation, We are V Youth Volunteering charity, the Football Foundation and the BBC.
Commentary is needed to improve access to football for thousands of blind and partially sighted supporters. It gives them the opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of the beautiful game, in the stadium, as it happens. A live audio commentary is broadcast via a low power radio transmitter, and is received through special headsets which allow people to sit anywhere in the ground - perhaps with friends or family. The system has been installed at over 25 football grounds around the country with commentary provided by specially trained commentators.
From February 2010 the system has been in operation at the MK Dons stadium:mk home. Audio description of each home game is provided by Milton Keynes Hospital Radio's commentary team, who have attended SoccerSight's special training session.
Lead commentator Martin Thorpe explains "we were already at stadium:mk broadcasting our commentary back to the patients at the hospital. It was such a simple concept to plug the radio transmitter into our equipment to allow people within the ground to listen to our commentary too. We were delighted to be asked to be involved in making football in Milton Keynes more accessible in this way."
Anyone who would like to use the SoccerSight facilities at stadium:mk should contact the MK Dons Box Office. Use of the service is free to all ticket holders.
This season the MK Dons Soccersight service is sponsored by the MK Dons Supporters Association. For more information about the MKDSA click here
